Ever wonder what happens to a person who is on the verge of dying?
Do you believe in the visions a person sees during near-death?
Do you think these visions show a glimpse of an afterlife or are they simply just remnants of a dying brain?

These questions probably surface in your mind when you hear about the near-death experiences of people like Anita Moorjani who miraculously recovered from cancer, Howard Storm who saw demonic creatures in hell and A.J. Ayer, an atheist, whose beliefs may have been shaken after his close encounter with death.

In her new book, What Happens After You Die?, Eliza Palmer expounds on these stories and explores the theories, ideas, and beliefs that surround near-death experiences. Palmer, who specializes in enhancing memory and consciousness, took interest in this topic because it has never been proven yet-whether near-death experiences are a product of brain chemistry or of the human consciousness, as what believers would call "the soul."

The book cites several studies and personal experiences that will either strengthen your belief in the afterlife or weaken it. Only you will know the answer once you finish reading it. Palmer will leave you to decide whether you choose to believe it or not.

With this book, every curious or confused reader will be able to learn the following
  • Common elements found in near-death experiences and their popular theories
  • The impact of a near-death experience and what religion has to do with it
  • What material scientists, agnostics and atheists think of near-death experiences
  • The different methods for simulating near-death experiences
  • Why certain people experience negative near-death experiences and how it affects them
  • The reasons why people want to believe in an afterlife
  • Remarkable accounts of people who went through a near-death experience

What Happens After You Die? A Closer Look at NearDeath Experiences and the Possibility of Afterlife edition by Eliza Palmer Religion Spirituality eBooks

I purchased this book because a friend of mine just recently had a near-death experience herself. Her story of being unconscious for a few minutes and journeying to a higher realm really fascinated me. I wasn’t sure if I believed her at first but after reading this book, I realized how common these near-death visions are.

Enough about my friend though, let’s talk about the book. Palmer’s book is just a short quick read, which explores NDE’s and the ideas around it. I’ve listed below the specific things I liked about the book.
• No sides taken
The author is very clear about her intentions in the book. She neither forces her readers to believe in the soul nor does she discourage us from believing it. Most NDE books I found here in Amazon are geared towards an agenda to convince you that there is a God, a Buddha or whatever religion the author belongs. It’s refreshing to read a book where the author does not force their beliefs on their readers.

• NDE personal accounts
The book only has 10 NDE accounts. Most of these are already widely publicized ones where the experiencers (as Palmer calls them in her book) themselves already have books of their own which describes a detailed account of their NDE. I was constantly reminded of my friend’s experience after reading each of those stories. The ones occurring in hell particularly upset me for some reason; probably because I was brought up to believe in a heaven and a hell.

• Distressing NDEs
I know I said earlier that I was upset by NDEs occurring in hell but I also couldn’t help but become interested. I wonder what could have provoked such experience to happen but it sure makes you wonder why certain NDEs happen to certain people. Some suicide attempters experience the same positive NDEs as others but I’m curious as to why a certain person would experience a negative one.

• Sam Parnia’s study on the human consciousness during NDE
I found this part of the book particularly interesting. Palmer states that Parnia’s study is one of the first few NDE-related studies that delve into the human consciousness. I won’t bore you with the details of the experiment but I will tell you that the results are pretty interesting in an ambiguous way.

Now onto the cons:
• The ways to simulate an NDE
I felt like that part of the book didn’t have to be included. I understand that the author’s goal was just to let readers know that NDEs could be simulated but she could have stated that and not enumerate the ways that it could be done. My fear is, there may be some unguided people out there who are willing to try these methods in the hopes to achieve the same enlightenment as the NDE experiencers. NDE accounts already shed enough light on what we can expect during death.

There you have it. I hope this review was helpful for you. It’s really just a quick-read so I recommend that you buy it. It might just transform the way you think about our life here on earth.

the same thing over and over. I lost interest
On time and well packaged.
Can I be honest? In less than an hour, I just got my mind boggled all because I read this book. I mean that in a good way, of course. My level of confusion just got to an even higher notch and I don’t know if I should be happy or miserable.
Eliza Palmer’s book thoroughly explores the world of NDE’s, the cause behind such experiences, and what they imply. I will admit that I am neither religious nor am I an atheist. I do believe there’s a Supreme Being out there but I also don’t mind dying with the knowledge that nothing will follow after we die.

Now let’s move on to my thoughts about the book. What do I think?
I wished Palmer cited more studies about NDE’s, although I’m sure that would only boggle my mind even more. Knowing that a certain number of people experience negative NDE’s makes you wonder what factors these people have in common to go through such distressing experience.
She also discusses the ways that a person can imitate the effects of NDE. NDE’s are no doubt, special experiences but the idea that they can be simulated just takes you back further from believing that NDE’s are anything but special.

Then there’s also the story of Anita Moorjani who miraculously healed after going through NDE. She was battling cancer for more than four years and fell into a coma. After waking up from her coma, all her tumors suddenly disappeared and she attributes this miracle to her NDE where she met a supreme being.
See what I mean? Conflicting ideas like this just make me question my beliefs even more. If you’re like me and you enjoy a little mind boggler then I highly recommend you get this book.
I’m not sure if believing in an afterlife is what you would consider new age-y but since I’m a big fan of new-age topics, I decided to buy this book. It’s all about NDEs; what people see during these experiences, how it affects them, and what they tell us about the human consciousness.
Palmer does a great job in keeping an objective view of the topic. Here are just some of the stuff I loved about the book.

The NDE account from a noted atheist. The NDE of one popular atheist A.J. Ayer intrigued me. Ayer has been an atheist all his life but not until he had an NDE of his own where he claims to have met a Supreme Being. Considering that he is a man who has written dozens of books defending the idea that God does not exist, I found his experience particularly interesting.

Religion’s effect on NDE. In the book, it’s discussed how religion can affect a person’s NDE. There’s a chance you might encounter a religious figure from your religion but it’s not always a guarantee given that some atheists report to seeing Jesus in their NDE even if they don’t believe in such deity. The research I read didn’t really provide any conclusive answers but it’s helpful to know that your religion may somehow affect your NDE.

The unpredictability of NDE’s. This is partly related to what I said in the previous paragraph. Reading the whole book made me conclude that NDE’s are VERY unpredictable. You never know who will experience it, what that person will see, and how it will affect them. You’d have to read the book to understand what I mean.
That’s it! I don’t really have anything bad to say the book. I like to believe in an afterlife and reading this book just made me believe in it even more. I highly recommend you get your own copy.
